It was so much fun drawing on the clear plastic picture plane. To be able to draw a foreshortened view of your hand by simply tracing was amazing. Again you were concentrating on perception of edges and getting into the R mode... drawing world. So what is drawing? Copying what you see... are you seeing "right"... After completing this book you sure will. Using the picture plane Betty says, "is like magic". Let me once again reiterate: EVERYONE can draw... given the right instruction and desire. And EVERYONE should learn how to draw... not to necessary to become a professional artist - but to simply be utilizing your 'whole brain'... to do what ever it is your doing. Off to more hands... Leana my buddy is right there with me... Way to go Lee! dlm

This is my 2nd upside down drawing. This took me about 57 mins and the time did fly. When I got frustrated I just worked on a different part. I am amazed on how quickly I am seeing different. I remember just focusing on the edges and lines and not thinking now this is a hand or a head. As I got half way through I felt I was sketching more, my pencil shifted away from line drawing. Below you'll see my 1st upside down drawing in 2009. These are 2 pictures exercises from the book. On to hands... I am finally going to finish this book..."Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by: Betty Edwards. I found it in '08 and have done almost 1/2 of the book... I have read the beginning now 3x and I am more fired up then ever. I makes me crazy that we are not already teaching this in all our schools everywhere! So to hold myself accountable to finished the book and get properly training in drawing... I'm going to blog my journey. So you start by making a record of where you are now... below are some other drawings I have done in the past. Everyone can draw... with the proper training of 5 basic's and learning how to "how to see right" you can do it ... I can, you can and everyone can draw... "Would you expect yourself to solve a problem in algebra without any instruction?" "All drawing is the same, except for the degree of complexity - the same skills and ways of seeing are involved in drawing still life, landscapes, figure and of course portraits,." says, Betty Edwards. I hope I have inspired some of you to give it a try... "When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be, he become an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressive create. he becomes interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and opens ways for a better understanding. Where those who are not artists are trying to close the book, he opens it and shows there are still more pages possible." Robert Henri The Art Spirit, 1923 I am also attempting to bring both of my kids through this journey with me, Lucas age 10 and Leana age 6. "Be the change you want to see in the world"... hopefully my husband will also be inspired and want to join the fun...:-) My goal is to try and draw everyday until the book is completed...bye for now...off to draw. ps - painting is so much easier... |
